The economy is depressed, affected by money panic in U.S. and war in India (William comments on the bloodthirsty attitude of people towards the ‘sepoys’); also comments on the war in China, politics etc.

Engraving business – no work; he has left it

William has been appointed organist of the Episcopal Church Dumbarton; also timekeeper at Denny Brothers’ Engine Works.

Wm’s father (William snr) is still earning good money in Constantinople, and sent money for Wm to buy a piano; so he is now teaching piano.  He also has an offer of teaching (at least 160 scholars!) as a schoolmaster but is not sure if they would ‘suit each other’

Brother John – went to Glasgow to work with Stevens and Fulton, but currently at Crum’s at Thornliebank…

A. Houston (their old foreman at Millburn’s) – married to Mary (Rankin)’s elder sister – manager at a new printing shop for Crum’s….
